I had a wonderful time hanging out with everyone at Homecoming. It was definitely worth the hours of driving. Hopefully we can all get together next year.

I was driving through rural Illinois on my way back to Madison last night, and I desperately needed to use the bathroom. So, I pulled into this podunk called Tonica, and went to the first gas station I see. On the door, they had a "Restrooms are for customers only" sign. For the sake of not being an asshole, after I voided my bladder I picked up a soda. The guy rang it up and I pulled out my trusty debit card. He asked me if I have any cash, and I showed him that I clearly didn't. Then he said there's a $10 minimum to use a card (which is in breach of his contract with the credit network, I do believe), so I told him I wouldn't have a soda, and walked out of the place.

So today my buddy Joe had an Iron Chef party. (It's the best idea for a party ever.) My teammate and I were assigned tomatoes and corn as our theme ingredients. For the Tomato Battle, we made a tomato and feta quiche and tomato, onion, and cheese mini-torts as a side dish. For the Corn Battle, we made Southwestern Chicken Soup and a sweet corncake for dessert. We thought we were really stretching for a dessert when we settled on the corn cake, but it was surprisingly popular, although everything was a hit. As a matter of fact, we took both battles, and the title since we were the only team to win both of our battles. (One of the judges for the Corn Battle ended up getting second and third helpings of the soup and kept commenting on how good the corncake was.)

If you're interested in the recipes, just ask.

Oh, and another thing. Every morning in the shower I see my roomie's V05 Moisture Milks shampoo. I think that's the most delightfully suggestive thing for the bathroom since that "a little pink in the sink" ad campaign that Crest(?) did.

I feel fine!

As [info]dragoni82 so pleasantly reminded me, I haven't posted in quite a while. I haven't had a whole lot of excitingness happen lately, but no unpleasantness, either. Let's see what I can come up with.

Life's been alright to me for the last few months. I adopted a dog, whose name is Howard. He's a yellow lab. (Maybe I'll post pictures of him sometime.)

I didn't end up getting to Rose in February like I thought -- not enough people signed up for interviews, so they only sent the girl from HR. I am however, going to be visiting Rose tomorrow and Friday, since I miss being around. Work's been treating me pretty well, but I decided to take a couple days off. As a bonus, I get to help my parents install broadband (yeah, that thing they wouldn't get when I was unemployed) on Saturday.

[info]blitzcon and I have been attending UW's anime club for a few weeks. It's good to be around otaku again. I decided to skip on ACen for this year, though. Maybe next year. I've also been current on the anime that's coming out this season. My recommendations go out to Disgaea for being really funny, .hack//Roots because I'm a .whore, Zegapain for being a mecha show that includes teleportation by entaglement and doesn't include bishies (okay, well the commander has bishie potential, I guess, but he hasn't made me hate him yet). Soul Link seems like it'll be another Space Academy anime like Stellvia (but I like Space Academy shows!), and I haven't seen Black Lagoon yet, but it looks to be full of gun-toting badasses.

Before I go, I have to put in a plug for a band I was introduced to a couple weeks ago. They're from Australia, and only put out one full-length album before they broke up, but it's pure awesomeness nonetheless. The band is Pornland, with their CD being In the Nude. They have a really funky sound (their website says they "bring the funk directly to your underpants") and some really funny yet musically impressive songs. And with titles like "Get it Up", "Slap dat Ass", and "Invasion of the Booty Snatchers", how can you go wrong? ...just be really careful about looking them up on Google.

Wot, no Quiz Whore Time?! That's right kids, no Quiz Whore Time.

I've always been interested in custom license plates and the little bit of insight they give you into other people's psyches, but it seems that they're much more prevalent here in Madtown than they were in Indy. (My favorite so far was SKYCLAD. For the uninitiated, this is a fancy word for nekkid.)

I saw one a couple days ago that was HORS MOM. After a few seconds, I was like, "Oh, it's horse mom." My first reading had made it possessive. Silly me. Turns out she doesn't have the opinion of her daughter that I had thought.

Also, while I was walking through the parking lot at the mall the other day, I saw a bumber sticker that said "Body piercing saved my life". While I was trying to figure that one out, I realized that the picture was a pair of hands with stigmata. I looked up at the license plate, and it said GO JESUS. Go figure.

It was a pointless update anyway, but it's Quiz Whore Time! )

So, [info]velvetblue88's copious amount of chocolates caused me to come up with an interesting Japanese culture question yesterday. I figure [info]blitzcon and [info]trythil and [info]nidoking are probably my go-to guys on this, but feel free to answer if you have any insight.

Girls give chocolate to the guys they like on Valentine's Day, and guys give chocolate to the girls they like on White Day. How, then, does it work for guys who like guys (and girls who like girls)? Do they just exchange on the day when that gender would normally give chocolate (maybe on the day when that gender would normally get chocolate), or would one give on Valentine's, and the other on White Day? (And how would they know which?)

Oh, and you should try this for your quiz whoring pleasure.

I should probably actually post more that sporadic "I Live" updates, but oh well. Work is going alright. I continue to have projects to work on. The go-live trip to New Hampshire fell through (and I also missed Homecoming), but I will be heading to Portland next month. Oh, and UGM went well, except for the horrible sound issues. I need to kick Sean and Raka into giving me pictures containing my mobster persona (at least I think I looked like one in a black suit and fedora) so I can post them.

Also, I finally decided on the name of my car, which is Elvira. Anyone who hasn't seen the movie should be educated at the next available opportunity.

And another thing. A PhysMag with Masking, Traceless Walk, and the Ghost spell (think Improved Improved Invisibility) is a stealthy mo-fo. Even when I get all threes on my stealth roll. Hmm, I wonder what kinds of changes they're going to make in SR4... I already heard that Deckers and Riggers got combined into one archetype.

I think, therefore I am a Quiz Whore. )

I realized the other day how long it has been since I shared the details of my life with all you guys back at home. Work is going pretty well. I'm done with my training, and have started doing some real work. The last of my certification exams came back this week, and I passed, so I'm all certifiablecertified now, which means a raise. My team lead is sending me to New Hamshire at the beginning of next month to help support a customer's Go Live. Unfortunately, this means that I'll be missing Homecoming. *weep* I'll try to get down there to visit sometime soon, since I miss you all. Of course, when I visit, I'll be in <voice style="Rod Roddy">A NEW CAR!</voice> As much as I loved the Deathcoupe, it's time had come. So I am now the proud owner of a black-as-night 2006 Ford Focus. And I'm still trying to name it. (We all know how seriously stupid the name of my last car was, but I had just read On a Pale Horse.) My current frontrunners are Nox or Nyx (goddess of night), Yami (darkness in Japanese), and Mystique. I'm open to suggestions, though. One of my personal favorite features of my new car is that the CD player plays MP3 CDs, which means I can load hours of music at once. It's fantastic. Once I finally get the pictures of my new sweet machine from Sean, I'll post them for you to see. (I guess I could always go snap a couple myself, but I hate my camera, especially since it randomly decided not to play well with my picture editing software anymore.)

A week from Tuesday is the beginning of the User Group Meeting at Epic, which is the one day a year I have to wear a suit. So I had to buy one. Which I did yesterday, and my pocketbook is still hurting. I think I'm going to pick up a fedora to go with it, though, since this years UGM theme is old detective movies. (It was superheroes last year. I have a picture of our president in tights to prove it.)

We have come to terms.

Once again I surface from the void long enough to broadcast the mundanaity of my life into the ether for all who care to listen. My internet service finally got installed tonight, which makes me so happy. That was one thing I hadn't thought of when I decided to go with a cell instead of a landline -- my internet availability was totally at the mercy of the cable company, which took a week and half to get an after-work appointment. Anyway, I really like my apartment, which would really suck if my family hadn't all pitched in and donated furniture. Also, since I'm the only one with a couch and a dinner table (Raka may have one or the other, but definitely not both, and Pokie has neither; Sean is subleting in a house but his housemates hate him), my place has become the cool hangout. Also, I cook, but seem to be unable to cook for only one person, so I end up inviting them over for dinner often. We're actually planning on going together to buy this sailboat (it'll only cost us about $175 each), since Pokie knows how to sail and the rest of us would love to learn. Sean is also now jealous of my singing talents (I didn't know I was that good, either) after I got mad applause at karaoke on Sunday. Now he's all down on himself claiming he doesn't have a special talent. We vowed to find it, but haven't discovered anything better than being good at driving like a maniac. I offered to call one of his ex-girlfriends and ask if cunnilingus was his special talent. The conversation stopped. (My work friends seem several shades less ribald than my home/school friends.) The only one who said anything was Raka, who asked what cunnilingus was. (?!) Being a party girl, I never expected her not to know a term like that. Then Pokie suggested he demonstrate it on me to see... I think she was just playing dumb... I'm not sure.

This week at work has been very boring. I mysteriously don't have any classes scheduled this week (and haven't yet for next week, but I assume I will), so I finished up the project for one of my classes and have been working through the exercises in the M Programming book. (M is the language the server side applications use.) It's a real snoozer. I don't have enough training to do anything useful, but my further training is delayed. On the other hand, last week (Friday in particular) was really cool. We had our monthly staff meeting last Monday, where it was discussed that some of our applications (the one I'm assigned to included) didn't have brand names. So I had kinda set my background process to thinking up a name. I work on ADT, or Admit-Discharge-Transfer, which keeps track of patients and beds in the hospital, by the way. So, Friday morning I email the president of the company (?!) with my proposal for a brand name, Conductor. We already have two musically-themed products, Prelude for patient registration and Cadence for appointment scheduling, so it fits in with that theme in that it directs the flow of the patient's visit. It also picks up a double meaning from a railroad conductor, as ADT takes the patient on their journey through the hospital. (I came to find out later there was already a bit of a train theme in play already in ADT.) Within a couple hours she had emailed me back and said she liked the name. Right now they're finding out if the name is already trademarked. If not, I totally got to name my application -- during my second week with the company. Getting a chance to impress the boss is always a good thing.

Also, what's an "I live!" update without Quiz Whore Time? )

I have just completed my first week with Epic. All in all, it's been pretty cool. I have had a shload of orientation classes (and will be in training for the next three months), but I'd rather learn what I'm doing so I don't kill patients or lose hospitals millions of dollars. My mentor is just as much a geek as I am, probably even more, and he already invited me to the D&D game he plays in. I finally got all of my paperwork turned in yesterday, so I have insurance. Hooray! Last night, one of my fellow New Hires decided to have a Mad City House Party. (Which actually was less fun than the Terre Haute House Party -- the music consisted of an iPod hooked up to some speakers.) Rakka and I went outside at one point to call Sean, who we found out hadn't shown up at the party because he didn't want to walk there (he was close) in the rain, which had stopped by then. This guy passed by while we were waiting for him to show up and said that we should go to this local rock show at the Corral, because there would be a bunch of bands there to play. After Sean showed up, he, Rakka, Ami, and I decided to blow off the party and head for the show. (After giving the number to Rakka's cell to TJ, one of the guys I was supposed to provide DD services for.) One the way we picked up Tawanda (it sounds like a girl name, but isn't -- he's from Zimbabwe.) The show was actually pretty cool, and featured (among others, since I didn't catch all the names) ACF, Ouija Radio, and Singin' Cyn-cyn and the Ponds (The guy vocalist for that band was PSYCHO). After it was finally over, Rakka realized that TJ had called her about half an hour before and she hadn't heard it, so we dialed him back and found out he was okay. When we made it back to my car, we found him passed out in my car. He woke up long enough to tell me that the other guy, Pat, was going to stay at the house for the night. Then I drove everyone home -- without getting lost. I think that was the best part, as prone to it as I am.

And today Sean, Tawanda, Ami, Rakka, Pokie (short for Poccahontas (sp?)), her boyfriend whose name I don't know, and I are going to a festival at the UW campus. It should be fun.

Next weekend I get to move into an apartment, assuming my payroll advance comes through so I can pony up the first month's rent. Hopefully my debit card will show up at the bank soon so I can get a real cell phone. Expect calls afterwards.

We have come to terms.

After last week's debaucle (well, it did start out well enough), this week has been much better. While Dad's still at home, he hasn't overdone it like he did last Friday. He had a little too much a couple of days ago, but he just got sleepy and went to bed after crawling around in the floor and barking at the dog. But, on to the good news: on Monday I took a skill assessment for Epic Systems. The first part was almost if not completely identical to the exam from Ontario that I took about a year ago. The last question on the second part required recursive and mathematical thinking -- and I'll admit that I think my skills (meager in math as they are anyway) have atrophied a little during my extended jobless stint. But, apparently, PLC payed off because I actually did manage to write the program that generated all well-ordered numbers with n digits. Their HR person said the test would be graded and looked at by a recuiter in about two weeks. I may or may not be closer to a job by then, because I got a second interview with Distance Support at Crane! Yay! (What office do you work in, [info]nidoking?)

Life, it seems, is pretty good right now. No, I don't have a job yet, but I do have a pair of interviews next week, one with Performance Validation (If Blue reads this, he'll remember it as the one I thought I blew at the career fair), and another at Crane (which is interesting because I don't think I applied there). I haven't heard anything out of NASIC, which makes me sad. I need to see if there's something I can't do to get that back on track. I'm (knock on wood) almost completely over the back muscle spasms I've been having for the last week and a half. (People who pay attention may remember that I had the same after the last time I did BigCats, except I had to get past it this time without muscle relaxants since I have no insurance.) Dad had back surgery today, which eliminated the pinching of nerves in his back and should clear up his leg pain/numbness.

Oh, and I saw Hitchhiker's last Friday, on its second showing in our local theater. I must say that it was much better than I had expected. I'm not sure there exists a better person to cast as Zaphod, but feel free to dispute that. The differences from the book took a little getting used to, but I'm okay with most of them. (The POV Gun was brilliant, especially in its final use in the movie.) The only one that I really took issue with was the love affair between Arthur and Trillian, which in the book series was definitely ruled out. I'm guessing we won't see Fenchurch in a sequel. And the singing dolphins rocked. Period. And my brother and I are having a dispute: the face that the Heart of Gold turned into during its last improb-out was Douglas Adams, correct?

Also, I have learned of the joy that is Psychonauts. I eagerly await acquiring my own copy.

I feel good about myself today. I actually sent out some more resumes today, which means I successfully held off the motivational deficiency for another day. I also played quite a bit of Xenosaga today. Maybe sometime soon I can finish it and start on the second one. But I'll probably get Digital Devil Story first -- it comes out later this month, as does the PSP, which I won't be affording anytime soon. Oh, to play Wipeout Pure. Mmmm, anti-grav racing. Of course, if I were to ever design anti-grav technology, I'd have to name it Levity, which is the opposite of Gravity.

So I have an excuse to come to campus on the weekend containing April 8th. I'm also incredibly bored. Give me an excuse to visit earlier.
